Money Secrets of the Amish: Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving By Lorille Craker

Lorille is like any other typical American, she has been hit by the recession. She comes to find out that the Amish do not seem to be affected by the recent recession in fact they are thriving. With the economy the way it is Lorille set out to figure out their secrets so that she to could help her family through this recession.

I loved this book. I will admit I have never been fully on my own so I am sure that I don't fully understand the strain of this recession but the lifestyle of the Amish is one to be admired. They are very frugal with the money and resources that God has blessed them with. We know them best of all for their simple clothing, but there is so much to learned from them. Lorille was able to talk to multiple families and was able to spend time with them and see them living out what they were telling her. There are so many applicable concepts in this book. Although I am not completely independent at the moment I am going to be implementing some of these principles in my life. One of the biggest things that helps them save money is that they thrift shop. They buy hardly anything new, which is a great way to save money. They are also very resourceful in their living, if they can build it on their own they are not going to buy it. One man in the book built his own machine to produce maple syrup right off the tree's in his yard. The rig that he built cost $300 and it would have been well over $1,000 for a new one. They also live off their gardens including canning for the winter. After reading this book it makes me want to try canning!
This book is fun and applicable and real. The author did a great job of incorporating her stories of transformation throughout the book.
